Eudard Gufeld, an International Grandmaster whose highest rating reached 2570, was born in Kiev, in the Soviet Union, in 1931. By his late 20s, he was considered one of the strongest players in the world. He defeated great players and world champions such as Mikhail Tal, Viktor Korchnoi, Boris Spassky, and Vasily Smyslov. Gufeld wrote over 100 chess books including The Sicilian Dragon: New and Revised, co-authored with Eric Schiller. His books have sold million of copies worldwide. One of his most famous games was included in the Mammoth Book of the World’s Greatest Chess Games, a selection of the hundred greatest games of all time. Gufeld died in 2002 at the age of 66.
